January 9, 2010If there’s one Canadian that deserves more cowbell in 2010, it’s Jeremy Wotherspoon. He’s the hard luck story of the Canadian Olympics, having accomplished everything in the sport aside from winning a Gold Medal. You might remember a fall during the start of the 500m in the Salt Lake Olympics, leaving him looking more like Bambi on ice than the most successful speed skater in the history of ever.
Since then, it’s been more ups and downs. He took a hiatus from the sport after 2006 and worked on a fishing boat in Norway. All that fishing gave him time to reflect, and like a NASCAR fan in the off-season, he found that he hopelessly missed the oval.
Strapping the blades on again in 2007/08, Wotherspoon won 9 out of 10 races. Then in 2009, a crash left his arm broken into six pieces. The recovery from his latest setback left many wondering if he’d even qualify for the Olympics.
Over the holidays in Calgary, he did just that, looking back on form in the 500m and winning the Canadian qualifiers—just in the nick of time.
So, beside the fact that he’s a passionate fly-fisherman (awesome), you owe it to yourself to cheer this Canadian to the top step of the podium in 2010.
